Title: John C. Akin’s ‘The Alliterative Alphabet Book’ Appears in the New York Times Book Review
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 30th Oct 2026 - The title appeared on page four in a showcase featuring seven other independently published works spanning fantasy, literary fiction, nonfiction, and children’s literature.Founded in 1896, the New York Times Book Review publishes book reviews, literary criticism, essays, and features, and has played a longstanding role in American literary culture. The showcase described the book as “twenty-six adventures full of alliteration, humor, and heart—perfect for curious minds ages four to seven.” True to that description, the book devotes one page to each letter of the alphabet, introducing a cast of exaggerated characters, such as Angie Axlerod, an acrobat who agitates alligators, and Zachary Zellenbach, a zoologist chasing a zesty zebra, each introduced in a short passage built around words beginning with the corresponding initial sound. Alexis Eastburn illustrated the book.In the foreword, Akin explains the book grew out of his career as a special education teacher at the elementary level, where his experience with a wide range of children’s books eventually led him to write one of his own. He notes that the book’s vocabulary is more advanced than the reading level of its intended audience, designed to be read aloud by an older child, teenager, or adult to a younger listener, with the alphabet introduced through humor and rhythm rather than simple repetition.Akin also describes researching the term “alliteration” while writing the book. He discovered it can refer to both the repetition of an initial sound and the repetition of an initial letter, and explains how both concepts informed the book’s wordplay.Readers can browse the August 9, 2026, issue of the New York Times Book Review on the New York Times news app. The...
