Sbarra and colleagues (2011), pooling 32 studies covering more than six million people, found a hazard ratio of 1.30 for mortality among divorced adults, with stronger effect sizes in men. Shor and colleagues (2012), analyzing 104 studies, arrived at HR 1.30 as well.A systematic review covering 7,881,040 individuals found divorced and separated men carried higher all-cause mortality, and stronger cancer and cardiovascular mortality risk, than divorced women. The Japan Collaborative Cohort Study found the same elevation in men — with no equivalent trend in women."Divorce is treated as a legal problem and an emotional one, and almost never as a medical event," said Dr. Ellis.
