It examines themes that include survival, sacrifice, hope, and the human cost of forced migration. The film adds to Mayel’s growing and distinctive body of work in Los Angeles.“The Road is based on my own experiences of displacement and migration,” explained Mayel, who is originally from Aleppo, Syria, but left the country during the war and later undertook an extended journey on foot across Europe to reach Sweden. “My lived experience contributes to my personal visual style and approach to storytelling.” Mayel credits his experiences in Syria, Turkey, Europe, Sweden, and the United States for informing his interest in stories involving displacement, survival, identity, resilience, and human connection.Mayel’s remarkable personal journey helped shape his artistic perspective. After establishing a life in Sweden, studying electronic and software engineering, and working professionally as a software engineer, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking.
