Title: New Research Reveals Shoplifting Rates Across Every Local Authority in England and Wales

United States, 7th Aug 2026 - A new analysis of three years of police-recorded crime data by research organisation the Open Research Forum has revealed stark regional divides in shoplifting trends across England and Wales, with offences in some areas nearly tripling while others have seen falls of more than 60%.The research, based on data.police.uk figures covering May 2023 to April 2026, found that shoplifting has risen 10.95% nationally over the three-year period, with 466,775 offences recorded across England and Wales in the year to April 2026, a national rate of 7.91 offences per 1,000 population.Hastings tops the table for rising shopliftingHastings recorded the single biggest increase of any local authority in England and Wales, with shoplifting offences up 199.66%, nearly tripling from 588 offences in 2023-24 to 1,762 in 2025-26.It was followed by North East Derbyshire (up 129.1%), Teignbridge (up 107.3%), Rutland (up 101.5%) and Pembrokeshire (up 99.6%). Haringey, North Devon, Melton, South Hams and Islington completed the top 10 areas with the sharpest rises, all recording increases of more than 80%.Newport sees the steepest fallAt the other end of the scale, Newport recorded the steepest fall in shoplifting of any local authority, down 72.17% over the same period. Caerphilly (down 67.0%), Blaenau Gwent (down 66.0%), Torfaen (down 61.8%) and Adur (down 54.7%) also featured among the 10 biggest falls, alongside Bracknell Forest, Monmouthshire, Tewkesbury, Shropshire and Forest of Dean.Where shoplifting is most concentratedLooking at offences per 1,000 residents, a different picture emerges.
