Her husband, Joe, was inspired by a 1950s article about a solo sailor who completed the route in a 17-foot outboard cruiser. He had dreamed of making the journey since his teenage years. After retiring, he spent five years preparing their 31-foot Bombay Clipper sailboat, Whoosher, before finally setting out.
