This shift is introducing new dynamics in digital visibility, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses in emerging markets.A report published by Mention.ma, a Morocco-based Generative Engine Optimization platform, highlights a structural gap affecting African businesses within AI-generated answers. According to the findings, many small businesses across the continent are underrepresented in responses generated by large language models, regardless of the quality or competitiveness of their offerings.The report attributes this trend primarily to the composition of training data used by AI systems. Large language models are built on datasets that are more heavily concentrated in Western markets. As a result, businesses operating in regions such as North and Sub-Saharan Africa are less frequently referenced or cited in AI-generated outputs.“AI systems reflect the data they are trained on,” said Othmane El Ouarzazi the founder of Mention.ma. “When entire segments of the global economy are underrepresented in that data, it directly affects their visibility in AI-driven discovery.”Language also plays a role. Businesses that publish content primarily in French or Arabic appear less frequently in AI-generated answers compared to those with a strong presence in English.
