Oxford, Mississippi, United States, 18th Oct 2025 - VOX PRESS, a non-profit arts organization based in Oxford, Mississippi, is proud to announce the release of Intersections: Seeking Self at Parchman Prison by Sally Lott McLellan. This memoir, slated for publication in 2025, captures the transformative journey of three years spent working with incarcerated men through VOX’s Prison Writes Initiative, an innovative outreach program that promotes creative arts within the Mississippi penal system.
The book chronicles McLellan's experience as she became a trusted friend and mentor to the men at Parchman Prison, encouraging them to explore their emotions and express themselves through art. "It was a wild leap into the unknown," McLellan explains. "I had to understand my strengths and weaknesses as both an instructor and a friend, in order to guide these men towards uncovering their creative spirits."
This memoir marks a historical milestone as the first published work on creative arts in the Mississippi prison system. The Prison Writes Initiative, founded by VOX PRESS, allows inmates to engage in various artistic forms such as drawing, painting, mask-making, sewing, and folk art, helping them rediscover their humanity. The initiative continues to thrive at the Marshall County Correctional Facility in Holly Springs.
“Intersections: Seeking Self at Parchman Prison is not just a book, it’s a testament to the redemptive power of art in one of the most challenging environments,” says Louis Bourgeois, Executive Director of VOX PRESS. “It’s an important contribution to the conversation around rehabilitation and the transformative potential of creative expression.”
The release of Intersections: Seeking Self at Parchman Prison represents a culmination of years of collaboration between artists and inmates, offering a window into the often-overlooked humanity within the Mississippi prison system.
The memoir is now available for purchase at VOX Books, on Amazon, and select bookstores.
